Coping with culture shock while teaching overseas
Coping with culture shock while teaching overseas Many of those who teach abroad will experience some degree of culture shock. Moving to a new and often different cultural environment makes the feeling of culture shock a very normal and real psychological phenomenon. With any move comes natural stressors, but relocating abroad presents a whole crop of new challenges: a different local language, new customs, new manners, and cultural norms. Itâs typical to find yourself in a social situation where youâre not sure what is the right thing to do or say. And while coping with these stresses can initially be clouded with the âhoneymoon phaseâ of travel, eventually an adjustment phase kicks in. This adjustment is what is known as culture shock. What causes culture shockThe onset of culture shock varies from person to person - it can be anywhere from a couple of weeks to six months. The initial three months are often characterized as the honeymoon phase, where new cultural phenomenons might intrigue and delight more than upset. Everyt hing seems new and exciting. But internally, our bodies are really dealing with physiological stress: lack of control, understanding new social norms, and perhaps difficulties in communicating. Trying to decipher how to respond properly in these situations can be exhausting and overstimulating. Culture shock symptomsCulture shock can manifest in many ways, and can appear as fleeting feelings or can last for weeks. But indulging these feelings can lead to unhealthy behavior such as over- or under-eating, or serious sadness or depression. Watch for the following symptoms during your first few months:HomesicknessSadness/loneliness/hopelessnessBoredomAversion to social interaction, or withdrawing from local relationships and communicating only with family at homeSleeping and eating too muchStereotyping or an increased tendency to think badly of local culture and peopleUncontrollable emotions (like crying over seemingly anything)Constantly comparing your home country to your placement countryThe symptoms of culture shock can come and go throughout your first year of teaching abroad. How to manage the effects of culture shockOne of the best ways to manage culture shock is to be aware of symptoms as they crop up. When you start to experience them, itâs important to tell yourself, âWhat Iâm experiencing now is probably culture shock.â After acknowledging that you are experiencing culture shock, which is a very normal reaction to lots of change, you can take the following steps to overcome any of the symptoms:Reassure yourself that these feelings will eventually pass once youâve settled.Take time to connect with yourself and honor your needs: keep busy with activities you enjoy, exercise regularly, develop a new hobby and set time aside for it each day.Dedicate some time to learning the local language to help overcome communication difficulties.Be easy on yourself: adjusting is hard work.Establish a daily routine that you stick to. Make sure to get lots of s leep and eat healthily.Make your apartment more comfortable with souvenirs from back home.Schedule time to indulge in a healthy dose of culture from your home country: listen to some music, watch one of your favourite movies, or eat your favourite dishes. These small things can help. And if you can, sharing some of your culture with local friends can provide some relief.Try to stop yourself from making cultural value judgments or comparisons with your home country. Most importantly: encourage yourself. Remind yourself of your reasons for going abroad in the first place. Each time culture shock symptoms show up, know that itâs just your body taking some time to adjust to everything thatâs new. Eventually, you will feel more comfortable in your new country and these pangs of nostalgia and homesickness will be shorter and more controllable.Again, culture shock is normal: it isnât a sign that you arenât suited to teaching abroad, itâs a sign that youâre human and youâre wor king through a very natural process. Being aware of the fact that you will likely experience some degree of culture shock is a good way to combat serious side effects or symptoms.

The Concept of Irreducible Representation in Chemistry
The Concept of Irreducible Representation in ChemistryAccording to the concept of irreducible representation, the two sides are essentially equally independent. On a strictly general level, it means that every position which occupies the same space in the two people's mind is equally valid and real. Irreducible representation says that two sides that have no physical connection with each other do not exist. In the context of science, irreducible representation can be utilized to refer to the situation where a scientific experiment cannot be carried out in all possible ways.Irreducible representation has been extensively used in the field of chemistry. It is primarily employed when the question of ordering molecules in a certain order appears as difficult to address. The first reaction that appears to be the easiest to carry out is for the molecules to be ordered in a specific order. This seems to be the most sensible option for many chemists, but if one is not careful the order may b ecome imbalanced and difficult to deal with.Irreducible representation can be effectively employed in this context. It tells us that it is not possible to arrange the molecules in a specific order by a single force such as gravity. To put it more precisely, it tells us that in this situation, some existing order must be created by the intervention of some other force. A better method would be to divide the molecule into two identical copies and to attach them together in such a way that each copy of the molecule has an equal chance of forming the best possible arrangement of the molecules. This creates an attractive force or repulsion between the molecules. These forces create a sort of symmetry and the most effective methods of creating this symmetry are determined by the conditions. In this respect, chemistry is defined by the principle of irreducible representation. For example, in the absence of matter, the atoms and their molecules would never be able to break the bonds of the m olecules which make up the atoms and hence wouldnot be able to bind.Irreducible representation is an important tool in the understanding of a large number of physical phenomena such as superconductivity and in the study of the molecular basis of life. The most recent applications of irreducible representation in chemistry have been made in the fields of biochemistry and the history of man. It is important to mention here that the use of an irreducible representation is still being used in many other fields. These include molecular dynamics, information theory, and so on. However, it should be noted that the use of an irreducible representation is not restricted to these areas. When a couple of colleagues in the Department of Chemistry in the University of London made the discovery of the C3 alcohol HHO, they used it in their research. The discovery was based on the fact that HHO is a compound that contains the nucleus of an oxygen atom, and on the fact that the oxygen is bonded to the indium oxide indium and this bond forms a highly reactive ionic molecule. The discovery has led to a revolution in the use of several atomic concepts in chemistry.

4 Benefits of STEM Studies
4 Benefits of STEM Studies Course offerings in STEMscience, technology, engineering, and mathematicshave become much more numerous and varied at the high school level in recent years, and there has been a concerted effort in many parts of the country to increase the influence of STEM studies in high school curricula. Nevertheless, many students who do not plan to study STEM-related subjects in college often enroll in the minimum number of required STEM courses during their high school careers. There are many benefits to students completing STEM classes outside their minimum graduation requirements, and these benefits apply equally to students who plan to major in a STEM field in college and to students who do not. Intellectual challenge One such benefit is the challenge that STEM courses offer. Certain students find classes in engineering, mathematics, science, and technology less difficult than liberal arts offerings, but these students frequently major in a STEM-related field in college. For students who are more naturally inclined toward the liberal arts or social sciences, the challenge of a STEM course can serve as a vehicle to further build their academic skills in all disciplines. Here are some great tips on how to succeed in science and engineering. Preparation for general education requirements In addition to the intellectual benefits that students receive from STEM classes, completing such studies while in high school can assist students with their graduation requirements in college. Most universities require students to participate in at least some STEM education while completing STEM courses in high school may not allow you to forego those requirements, this exposure can better prepare you for succeeding in those general education classes. Better preparation typically results in a better grade, and every improvement to your college GPA can improve your career and graduate school prospects. Employable skills STEM courses can help students build skills that are key to employment, even if their careers are not in a STEM field. STEM offerings, for instance, promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The STEM curriculum teaches students to collaborate in order to discover solutions to complex, multi-step problems, thus building the teamwork skills that so many employers seek in job candidates. It is often the skills developed while working with the materialas opposed to the material itselfthat will benefit students most. You may also want to consider thesegreat reasons why you should have a part time job in college. Variety of offerings Finally, the scope of STEM has expanded greatly in recent years to encompass classes that you may not have thought were available in years past. For instance, subjects such as alternative energy, digital design, and television production are increasingly common. Students who tend to avoid math and science courses would do well to notice the diverse array of offerings now available under the STEM umbrella. Modern high school STEM studies have expanded greatly beyond the standard high school math and science courses that most students already take, and at their advanced levels, these classes provide curricula that do a great deal to promote collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Enrolling in such classes beyond the minimum requirements can help prepare students both for college and for the workplace in a myriad of ways. Students who would otherwise not consider STEM studies should give them a second look as they contemplate their high school course schedules. You may also want to check out the STEAM movement.

Silently answer every question that the teacher asks the class, then listen for the correct answer from your teacher. If youre constantly staying engaged by mentally answering every question your teacher asks, youll be reinforcing grammar, vocabulary, and general fluency. Treat every class exercise like a Spanish quiz, and keep track of the answers you didnt know. A big part of studying successfully is using your time wisely. Be sure to keep track of what you dont know, so that if you only have a short time to study, you can immediately zero in on these areas. Use any extra time in class to study your vocabulary. Keeping up with memorizing Spanish vocabulary is a key method to progressing in the language. As your vocabulary list keeps growing, study it consistently, and it will be much less overwhelming. Youll become a more natural Spanish speaker, too! Ask your teacher questions when you dont understand something. The old adage about there being no stupid questions really is true. In fact, teachers love it when students ask questions, because it makes it clear to us whats still confusing to our students, so were in a better position to help them. Anytime you ask a question, youre also doing a favor to the countless other students who are wondering the same thing, but are too afraid to speak up! Teach a concept to a classmate. When a classmate doesnt understand something and youre able to explain it, do so. This helps cement the concept in your brain. Teaching someone else will help you figure out any fine points you may be still working out. If you can explain something and answer any questions that arise from your explanation, you have also maximized your understanding of the concept. Mimic your teachers Spanish accent and other natives speakers. A large part of sounding like a native speaker of a language is speaking confidently and convincingly, so envision yourself in a Spanish-speaking country, and play the part! Use your time wisely in the classroom this helps minimize your study time at home. As a student, it can be easy to fall into the hole of using class time to socialize or zone out. The smartest students, however, are those who realize that if you spend your class time in maximum focus and concentration, youll have much less work to do at home! How to Study for a Spanish Test The learning doesnt end when Spanish class gets out! Make sure you really understand how to study, especially if you have a test coming up (so you can avoid cramming). You can translate the meaning verbally or write it down on a separate sheet of paper. Study a section of vocabulary every day, focusing on the words that were introduced in class that day. If youre having trouble memorizing some words, make flashcards for them. This ensures you wont fall behind in vocabulary memorization and have to cram before your Spanish test. Be very focused in class; you can learn most of the material just by paying close attention and staying on task. This means you will be in reviewing mode before a test instead of cramming mode. Write down grammar concepts and examples on index cards, and review them every couple days. Trying to comprehend too many Spanish grammar concepts in a short amount of time can leave you confused.
